Frequently Asked Questions
Getting Started
How do I know if I need a lactation consultant? If breastfeeding feels painful, overwhelming, or something just does not feel right, that is enough reason to reach out. You do not have to be in crisis to ask for help. Many families come to me simply wanting reassurance, and that is completely valid.
How soon after birth should I book? The earlier the better, ideally within the first week. The early days set the foundation for your whole feeding journey. That said, it is never too late. I work with families at every stage, from newborns to toddlers.
Do I need a referral from my doctor? No referral is needed to book with me. You can schedule directly through my booking page at any time.
What should I expect during a visit? We start by talking through your concerns and nothing is too small. I will observe a full feeding, assess latch and positioning, check milk transfer if needed, and answer every question you have. There is no rushing. You will leave with a personalized written care plan.
How long does a visit last? Initial consultations are 60 to 90 minutes. Follow up visits are 60 minutes. I build in extra time because I never want you to feel rushed.
Can my partner or support person join? Absolutely, I encourage it. The more your support system understands, the better your experience at home will be.
Services
Do you offer in-home visits? Yes! I offer in-home support for families in Norwalk and surrounding areas in Fairfield County, CT including Westport, Darien, Greenwich, Stamford, Wilton, New Canaan, and Fairfield.
How do virtual visits work? We meet over a secure HIPAA compliant telehealth platform. You will receive a link before your appointment. All you need is a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera. Virtual visits are available across Connecticut and other eligible states.
Are virtual visits as effective as in-home visits? Yes, for most concerns virtual visits are highly effective. I can observe a feeding, assess latch visually, guide positioning in real time, and provide the same personalized care plan. Some situations benefit from an in person assessment and I will always be honest with you about that.
Can I schedule a prenatal session before my baby arrives? Absolutely. Prenatal breastfeeding education helps you feel more confident, prepared, and empowered before baby arrives. I recommend scheduling during your third trimester.
Do you work with pumping or bottle feeding families? Yes. I support all feeding journeys including combination feeding, exclusive pumping, bottle transitions, and return to work plans.
Are your services confidential? Yes. All consultations are private and protected with HIPAA compliant tools. Your health information is always handled with care.
Insurance and Payment
Do you accept insurance? Gentle Latch is a private pay practice. I do not bill insurance directly. However I provide a detailed superbill after every visit that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. Many families receive partial or full reimbursement depending on their plan.
What is a superbill? A superbill is an itemized receipt with all the medical codes your insurance needs to process a reimbursement claim. I provide one after every visit and you simply submit it to your insurance company.
What do I say when I call my insurance? Here is a script you can use word for word:
"Hi, I would like to ask about my coverage for out of network lactation consulting services. The provider is an IBCLC, an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant. Can you tell me if lactation counseling is covered under my plan? The CPT codes typically used are 99211 and S9443. Do I need a referral or pre authorization? And what is my out of network deductible and reimbursement rate?"
Write down the name of the person you spoke with, the date, and what they told you. This protects you if there is ever a question later.
Do you offer payment plans? Please reach out directly at natalia.milla@nurturegentlelatch.com if cost is a concern. I want to support as many families as possible and am happy to have that conversation.
